Ocean Hunt is a game of skill from RavKom Game Systems. It combines elements of Battleship with the familiar layout of "bingo type" games.
The object is to clear the board, destroy the ships and score as many points possible in the process. You will need to choose your moves wisely. The general idea is familiar: there is a 5 x 5 grid containing numbers. The grid represents squares on an ocean. There are 3 ships located on the grid - you must find them and destroy them while also attempting to score as many points as possible.
There are 20 rounds in a game, each round you get new numbers or symbols and must match them on the grid. When you remove a number, it uncovers what is underneath it. In some cases it will be blank ocean, in other cases it will be a ship or other special symbol. You get points for clearing horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. Bonus points are awarded for clearing the entire board.
Ah, but here is where it starts to get a little tricky. Instead of one row of number choices, you have two : one on the bottom and one on the side. For each row and column on the grid, you may choose a value from one or the other, but not both. You will have to plan which choices are the best at a given time. Each value on the bottom choice field may only be used in the column above it (with the exception of a Super Wild Shot), and each value on the side choice field may only be used on the row next to it.
TIP: To move to the next round, click the bottom row of choices.
Ships
When you uncover a ship, you get some points for each portion of a ship that you uncover. However, you must also destroy the ships. In order to do so, you must use the "destroy" symbol (or a wild) on that square instead of a number. When you do so, the ship will start burning. Once you destroy all parts of a particular ship, you will receive additional points, depending on which ship you destroy. The aircraft carrier is worth the most points, followed by the carrier and the submarine.
Special symbols that may appear on the board (other than ships)
Island symbol : This symbol gives extra points when revealed.
Star Bonus symbol: This symbol gives extra points when revealed.
Upgrade symbol: This is a good one to reveal. When it is revealed, it will double all points received from that point forward.
1/ 2 Symbol: This one is bad. When it is revealed, all points received will be halved. *However, it can be destroyed using one of the destroy choices (or a wild) and the penalty will be removed. Yay!
Special symbols that may appear in your choice field
Destroy: This symbol may be only be used to destroy an uncovered ship or remove the 1 /2 penalty from the board.
Wild Shot: This symbol can be used to uncover any square in the appropriate row / column.
Super Wild Shot: When this symbol is presented as a choice, you may select any square on the grid to either uncover or destroy (if applicable). When this choice is displayed, your first move will use it.
Bonus Star: This symbol grants extra points when it is displayed. It cannot be used to select any squares on the grid, however.
WOOT/ DOH! When this symbol is displayed, it triggers a sequence where the outcome will be a WOOT! (which grants bonus points) or a DOH! (which will subtract points). The points added or removed will either be 25% or 50%.
